ISABELLA FERNANDA MAYORGA
I come from the suburbs of inland California and a large extended family of Ecuadorian immigrants. In 2019, I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies. Following that I started a master's program in the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan and graduated in 2021 with a dual-track degree in Geospatial Data Science and Ecosystem Science and Management. My graduate thesis included synthesizing ecosystem service and biodiversity data from coffee farms in Puerto Rico as part of a study evaluating the tradeoffs and synergies associated with agroforestry management. As an undergraduate, I completed a research project at the University of California, Santa Cruz studying the local and landscape drivers of urban bird diversity and abundance in community-managed gardens of coastal California. In March 2021, I started a new position with the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) as the lead and coordinator of the education sector.
My broad interests in sustainability include habitat restoration, wildlife conservation, food systems, urban ecology, and renewable energy systems. I believe that sustainability is inherently rooted in social justice and that lasting environmental protection cannot be achieved independently of support from local communities. In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing, running, redesigning second-hand clothing, and plant-based cooking.
