As part of a 2020 Dow Fellows Team assessing the feasibility of implementing an urban farming program in Saginaw, Michigan, I developed a GIS suitability analysis model to identify which of the 6,400+ vacant parcels managed by the local land bank would be the most ideal for farming. Suitability was based on vacant parcel density, parcel size, distance away from major roads, and proximity to irrigation sources like water wells and fire hydrants. The results of this analysis will be used by a local nonprofit, the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy, to assess community interest in the highlighted regions and begin developing a soil contaminant testing plan.
